UK Environmental Directory Demonstrator Pilot Web site

Welcome to the data file creation page for the SWED (Semantic Web Environmental Directory) project. This short series of pages takes you through the stages needed to add your project/organisation to the SWED directory. The stages are described in the joining SWED web page.

In order to begin creating the information record about your organisation or project, please choose from the categories below. The notes to the right of the choices give more detail about which is appropriate in your case.

Special note about organisation/part of organisation:
In most cases smaller organisations will have just one entry in the directory. However larger (or complex) organisations may wish to have one main entry and individual entries for each of their departments, faculties, projects etc. As part of the next stage of this form it will be possible to indicate the relationship(s) between a Part of Organisation and its parent organisation.

Environmental Organisation An organisation is a company, corporation, firm, enterprise, authority, institution or other group entity. In general it will have an independent legal identity. It will generally have an indefinite life time.
Part Of Environmental Organisation Part of an organisation, is any identifiable sub-unit of a parent organisation. It will not have an independent legal identity separate from its parent organisation. e.g. a department, faculty, etc.
Environmental Project A project is an organized set of activities directed toward a common purpose. It will generally have a specified lifetime, resources and budget. It will generally be administered by an organisation or organisations. It may have a number of partner organisations. It will not have an independent legal identity.

*Important information about copyright
As with all data the copyright is owned, by default, by the creators of the information - in this case the organisations and projects themselves. However SWED aims to make the information about environmental organisations/projects available to anyone that would like to use it (as part of the semantic web). That includes taking copies and re-publishing the information e.g. as part of a specialist directory.

So, under current copyright laws, we need to make sure that anyone using the data has explicit permission to use the information from the copyright holders. To this end we have included a legal statement in the SWED data creation process and data files, that makes the permission to reuse the information explicit - this takes the following form.

"THE LICENCE. In return for downloading and hosting the RDF data on your website, database or other data storage repository , we hereby grant to you an irrevocable licence to perform, in relation to the data provided in rdf format, any act otherwise restricted by copyright."

This 'licence' text is embedded in the data (RDF) file that is created when you fill in the form on the next page. For more details on the SWED copyright approach, see our FAQ
